Sal Tree Uses, Benefits and Facts


Sal Tree: Sal tree is a deciduous tree with an average height of 35 meters. It is an evergreen tree. Its leaves are green and the flowers are yellow. Sal tree is found all over India. It is mostly found in the foothills of the Himalayas. Sal tree requires more water, so it is generally propagated where there is moist and sandy loam soil. It is mostly propagated through cuttings. Its fruits ripen in the month of June-July.

Sal Tree is commonly known as Shorea robusta, salwa, sakhava, kandar, shal or shala tree. It is a species of tree that belongs to the family Dipterocarpus. They are native to India, Bangladesh and Nepal. It is also known as the state tree of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Wherever Sal trees grow, they dominate the forest.

A Sal tree is mostly worshiped in Hindu culture because it is called an avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is also considered sacred in Jainism and Buddhism. In addition, the sal tree resin is also known as the cell dammer and holds an important position in Ayurvedic medicine for its astringent property. Fruits and seeds have many health benefits and the oil extracted from their seeds is used for cooking.

1. Healed Wound: The thickened fluid found in the outer cells of the tree (known as Rala) acts as a crust and helps to heal an open wound. As a result, they protect the wound from any infection and speed up the healing process.

2. Helps relieve pain: An important element found in Sal Tree helps to heal cracking cracks and fractures and also treats the pain arising due to such problems.

3. Removes Stains: Asra-Dagdaruk, an important element of the Sal-tree, helps to remove scars from that place very effectively as well as to heal wounds. They are known to reduce or lighten scars and sometimes make it disappear completely.

How to use Sal tree ?

  • Take a quarter or half teaspoon of Sal Tree powder, mix it with honey or water. Take it twice a day after noon and dinner. 

  • Take 8-10 teaspoons of boiled rice extracted from the salt tree. Add water and drink once or twice a day after meals. 

  • Make a paste of leaves or bark of sal tree, add rose water and apply on the skin twice or apply the skin three times on the stain. Wait for 5-7 minutes before washing it. 

  • One-quarter or half teaspoon of sal tree resin is mixed with honey and applied to wounds once or twice a day for best results.

Side Effects of Sal tree

There are no possible side effects of Sal tree. They are mostly eaten for easy digestion and also because it provides many health benefits. It is given to lactating mothers to improve their milk production. However, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is always considered safe to consult a doctor before consuming it.
